Marriage License

Types of Licenses

The information below is specifically for Marriages in San Diego & Riverside Counties. License Other counties in Southern California are very similar, but may vary slightly in the details.

Call the recorders office closest to you to make an appointment.  Both of you must appear with acceptable ID. Speed up your appointment by downloading & completing the forms in advance.  Be sure you have the correct form completed to obtain a certified copy (especially for destination couples), & attach it to the license with a check to cover the fee, when the license is sent for recording.

Standard / Non-confidential License:
•    Fee in San Diego County is $70.
•    Effective immediately (there is no waiting period in California).
•    Valid for 90 days. May be married anywhere in the State of California.
•    No residency requirement in California.
•    Blood Test not required
•    If under 18 years of age, must contact Juvenile Court.
•    Witness required for ceremony (one witness is required, but there is space on the license for two witnesses).
•    Certified copies available in approximately one to two weeks.
•    Certified copies may be obtained, for a $15 fee, by specific authorized individuals with proper identification. Written requests must have the signature of either party notarized.
•    A public record.

Confidential License:
•    Fee in San Diego County is $89.
•    Effective immediately (there is no waiting period in California).
•    Valid for 90 days. Ceremony must take place in the county in which it is issued. If you plan on getting a license elsewhere and coming to San Diego County to be married, it must be a Non-Confidential License.
•    No residency requirement in California.
•    Blood Test not required
•    Parties must be at least 18 years of age and living together as a married couple.
•    No witness required for ceremony.
•    Certified copies available in approximately one to two weeks.
•    Certified copies may be obtained, for a $15 fee, only by either spouse with proper identification. Written requests must have the signature of either party notarized.
•    Not a public record. Clerk can only verify existence of marriage.

Note:  You are still required to appear in person to pay/present ID’s to obtain your Marriage Certificate.  

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?  

After the ceremony, the license must be returned to one of the County Recorder's offices within 10 days of the wedding for recording. It is the officiant's  responsibility to return it for you, either by mail or in person. Revs. Pat & Kelly will process your marriage license with the County Clerk's office within three business days after the wedding either in person or by mail.  Certified copies may be purchased approximately 7 - 10 days after recording, and cost $15 each. Be sure to get that form especially if you live out of state.

NOTE: Only specific authorized individuals will be permitted to receive certified copies of marriage certificates. This legislation requires notarization of applications for these records when the request is not submitted with the original application.
